NRS Captions

In NRS Captions you speak directly to the other person. You can listen to their responses or read them on your screen after they’ve been captioned by the Relay Officer.

How does an NRS Captions call work?

The hearing person listens. The hearing person talks. The Relay Officer types what the hearing person is saying. You read the responses and can listen as well. The steps are repeated.

What equipment is needed?

You need a phone and a device with an internet connection. For example, any type of phone and a computer or tablet, or just a smartphone. Calls are made through the NRS app or the NRS Captions call page(Opens in a new tab/window).

How much will it cost?

It’s free to use the NRS. However, a call through NRS Captions might have both data and call costs, so your device will need to be connected to WiFi or have a plan with data available.

Step-by-step instructions

  Go to the Make an NRS Captions call page (nrscaptions.nrscall.gov.au)(Opens in a new tab/window) or click on the NRS Captions call link at the top of each page in accesshub.gov.au
  
  Or, you can make an NRS Captions call using the NRS app. Just open the app and select NRS Captions (Speak + Read) from the Select your call type menu, then tap Continue.

  Log in using the phone number and password you set up during registration.
  
  If you need to register for the NRS then click on the Not registered? link. Follow the prompts and register.

  After you click Login you will be asked what number you want to use to receive a call. Enter the phone number including the area code and click the Submit button.

  You will then need to complete the area code and phone number you want to call.
- 5.
  
  If you are entering a number to call starting with 1800, 1300 or 13. A dropdown box will appear. Choose the state where you are calling from.
- 6.
  
  After you have completed this section, click Connect now.
- 7.
  
  Watch the screen and answer your phone when it rings.

  Your call will soon be connected to the NRS, with a Relay Officer converting the words of the other person to the captions seen on your screen.
  
  If you are listening as well, there will be a short delay between hearing the other person and the captions appearing on your screen.

  Listen to the other person.
  
  Watch the screen for captions and speak directly to the other person.
- 10.
  
  To end the call, say ‘goodbye’ and hang up the phone.
  
  Click Hang up at top right-hand corner of the screen.

  To receive an NRS Captions call, your caller will need to call the NRS on 1300 018 342 and:
  
  provide the phone number you registered with and your name; and
  
  ask to be connected to you.

  Go to the Make an NRS Captions call page (nrscaptions.nrscall.gov.au)(Opens in a new tab/window) or click on the NRS Captions call link at the top of the page in accesshub.gov.au.

  Or if you are using the app, select NRS Captions (Speak + Read) then click on Receive a call near the bottom of the screen.
- 4.
  
  You need to log on first using the phone number you registered with and your password. If you are not registered – click the Not registered? link and follow the prompts.

  After you click Login you will be asked what number you want to use to receive a call. Enter the phone number including the area code and click the Submit button.

  Then click on the red Receive a call button.

  The Caption Receive a Call window will then open up. To receive a call, you need to keep this page open on the device you are using.
- 8.
  
  Answer the telephone when it rings to start the call.
- 9.
  
  Say “hello” and give your name. The call is now connected to the NRS, with a Relay Officer (RO) converting the words of the other person to the captions you can see on your screen.
  
  If you are listening as well, there will be a short delay between hearing the other person and the captions appearing on your screen.

  Listen to the other person.
  
  Watch the screen for captions and speak directly to the other person.

  To end the call, say ‘goodbye’ and hang up the phone.
  
  Click Hang up at top right-hand corner of the screen.

  Go to the Make an NRS Captions call page (nrscaptions.nrscall.gov.au)(Opens in a new tab/window) or click on the NRS Captions call link at the top of each page in accesshub.gov.au.

  On the log on page, click on Call 000 (you won’t need to log on).
  
  OR if you are already logged in, click on Call 000 in the I want to make a call window.

  In the I want to make a call window you can also enter 000 and then click Connect Now.
- 4.
  
  Watch the screen and answer your phone when it rings.
- 5.
  
  Your call is now connected to the NRS.
- 6.
  
  Wait to be connected to the Emergency Services Officer (ESO).
- 7.
  
  Watch the screen for captions. There will be a short delay between hearing the ESO and captions appearing.
  
  Speak directly to the ESO. Answer all questions and do not hang up until the ESO tells you the call is finished.
- 8.
  
  To end the call, say ‘goodbye’ and hang up the phone.
  
  Click Hang up at top right-hand corner of the screen.
